Tissue culture, explained

What is tissue culture?

A plant grown in a laboratory from a few cells of its parent: pest-free, identical to the parent and a fraction of the old price. Here is the whole journey, from the lab to your windowsill.

How it’s made

From a few cells to a plant

Propagation in a laboratory instead of a greenhouse. It is how most rare aroids are multiplied today.

  1. 1

    A few cells

Taken from a healthy parent and sterilised. No pests, no disease, no soil.

  2. 2

    Sealed and sterile

Grown on nutrient gel in constant warmth, near 100% humidity.

  3. 3

    Multiplied, true to type

Many identical plantlets, each genetically the parent. Variegation included.

  4. 4

    Rooted and shipped to us

In sealed, labelled containers. They have never seen open air, so they need a gentle start at yours.

Pre-orders, start to finish

Your pre-order journey

Early orders get the best batch price and the front of the queue.

  1. 1

    Order placed

Your price is held until the plant ships.

  2. 2

    Cut-off date

The batch closes and we order from the lab. Later orders join the next batch.

  3. 3

    Lab confirms

If a variety can’t be supplied, you choose a full refund or a swap of equal value.

  4. 4

    Arrival and inspection

Plants land in Canada and are checked by us before packing.

  5. 5

    Delivered to you

Tracked, early in the week. About two to three weeks after the cut-off.

The first month

What arrives, and how to settle it in

A small plantlet with roots but no soil, used to 100% humidity. Easing it down to room air is called acclimation, and it is everything.

Day 1: photograph itStraight out of the box.
Lid on, bright shadeDamp medium, clear container, no direct sun.
No water for 2 weeksThe medium already holds enough.
Open a little each dayAfter 2–3 weeks, once new growth shows.
Pot up when it’s firmChunky aroid mix, a pot only just bigger than the roots.

Good to know

The honest small print

True of every live plant. Tap a question.

Will my plant look like the photo?

Each plant is its own plant. Size, leaf count and variegation vary, photos are examples, and plantlets arrive small.

Is variegation guaranteed?

Tissue culture keeps the parent’s genetics, but variegation shifts with conditions and time. Not guaranteed unless a listing says so.

A leaf is yellow or bent after shipping. Is something wrong?

Usually not. A little yellowing or a bent leaf is normal shipping stress while new growth keeps coming. Photograph it on arrival anyway.

Are the plants pest-free?

Tissue culture is sterile and we inspect every plant. A short quarantine from your other plants is still wise.

Can I cancel a pre-order?

Pre-orders, no: the lab has already been paid for your plant. Ready-to-ship orders, yes, any time before they ship.
